Nokia and the New York Wifi-network startup Wifi-Salon announced yesterday to work together to bring free wireless LAN access to all the major public parks in New York City. Wifi-Salon obtained the exclusive right to build these networks from the NYC Department of Parks & Recreation. Free muni WLAN access networks are also being rolled out in San Francisco (where Tropos Networks, Google and Earthlink partner). One other such network (like in Anaheim, Mountain View, etc.) is in Florida, St. Cloud, where Tropos Networks provided us some data on the subscriber growth and other details. See here.
Now the business model of those free access networks is not fully clear to me. We will try to get some feedback from Wifi-Salon. Assuming that they actually get paid by the NYC government and run some local advertisement. The latter of course will bring some privacy advocates to jump on the trees and possibly attack the access points...
