Windows Live OneCare offers three scanning programs for free:
- Protection scanner: checks for viruses and spyware and removes it
- Clean up scanner: checks for unneccesary files and registry entries and deletes the same
- Tune up scanner: only checks if you should defragment your hard disk and of course can then also do it
I run all three on my XP computer. Her are the results:
- virus and spyware could not be found so it is not smarter than the software I already use
- found a few hundred MB of unnecessary files and also registry entries that it deleted, thanks
- I could have run the defragmentation but decided not to do so, not worth it I thought
If you want to automatically do the above then you can subscribe to the service, initial 30 days are for free. I decided that I don't need that since I have other software already, but might check back every few months to see what other freebees Microsoft OneCare gives us.
