The
news that FON has won over British Telecom as a partner in the UK shows two things: First it validates FON's business model and moves them closer to becoming a global player. They will open FON access to more than 3million BT Total Broadband customers, allowing them globally free Wifi roaming if they allow others to use their own broadband connectivity by installing a FON Wifi access point. The other aspect of this news is that BT must have somewhat changed its strategy in becoming a wireless service provider. Not being a wireless operator, there were reports about trials going on with WiMAX base station vendors, and it seemed clear that BT would soon invest into a WiMAX network. This seems - at least to some extent - open now in my opinion. A dense indoor Wifi network could well be all they need, and end user devices would also be available already (dual phones with Wifi and GSM). And of course every laptop has a Wifi link anyway. At the very least I would think that the deployment of a WiMAX network will be delayed, and no longer that urgent for them. I'll be curious to hear what they announce about this.
