T-Mobile USA plans to get its 120 licenses acquired from last month's spectrum auction to work as soon as possible, will mean an additional $2.7 billion of investment into new network infrastructure.
This infrastructure will be based on UMTS / HSDPA in the 1700 and 2100MHz bands. The goal is to get subscriber numbers up quickly as well as to get rid of its image in the US market as a low-end service provider. T-Mobile USA has currently only 23 million subscribers whereas the three others Sprint Nextel, Cingular and Verizon Wireless are in the 50 million subscriber range.
It is always a good strategy to try to move forward with new investments, I think, rather than only having the CFO look for more ways how to cut costs. So this appears to be a good strategy in my opinion - finally.
