Today the WiMAX World event in Boston starts. This is the worldwide biggest conference and exhibition for this upcoming long range wireless technology.
Operators and service providers are informing themselves on the latest and trying to collect the required info to make a business and/or technical decision.
The continued push from the big companies Intel, Motorola and Samsung as well as some latest operator announcements (Sprint Nextel) provide the necessary support to maintain the WiMAX market thrust.
If WiMAX, as in Sprint Nextel's case, is becoming a 4G replacement with other operators too, or is to remain a one time exception, has yet to be seen. Where WiMAX will play a significant role for sure is as a last mile access technology where no other broadband is available, and then as a backhaul technology using fixed point-to-point connections that can be built faster and with less cost.
As a last note on the event organizer Trendsmedia. Trendsmedia was acquired by The Yankee Group last week.
