A new
report by an international group of researchers caught attention in the European Community. Interestingly the report is from US researchers, but I don't think similar discussions are going on in the US. The result of this 600 page report, which is a summary of 2000 scientific research results, is that with 10 years use of mobile phones the risk for brain tumors increases by 20-200%. A EC-financed research project,
REFLEX, did not come up with such strong statements, but also confirmed that RF radiation with even low energies change cells and genes.
I am not a supporter of the radical anti-RF smog initiatives at all, but think that low radiation mobile phones (SAR values) as well as the use of headsets (wired I suppose
) might be required or smart to do. I have started using them and try to force myself to do so regularly. Many years back a friend of mine from Canada did a PhD in electrical engineering at the University Karlsruhe in Germany measuring RF field strengths in the head when using mobile phones. He came up with a head/mobile phone model showing which parts are more exposed. Not surprisingly, the ones with higher water content such as the eyes. He showed me pictures that looked quite concerning and I asked myself at that time (more than 15 years ago) if the use of cell phones is damaging. Looks like now they have an answer.
