This morning I renewed two software subscriptions. One with Symantec for firewall and virus etc. protection and with Feedblitz whose service we use to distribute this blog.
In both cases I experienced the same annoying thing that you can see so often with - primarily - US companies. When you fill out the payment details they have a US form that contains mandatory fields which are irrelevant or non-existent in other countries. While they let you select your country they don't then adjust the fields. In my two examples I tried to enter the VAT number so we don't have to pay for that. It did not accept our Swiss VAT number and even said it was incorrect. Quite funny and an entirely wrong comment. I ended up paying the VAT then anyway. This was with Symantec. In the case of Feedblitz I experienced the classic annoyance which is now partly fixed in other company's forms but not there. They expect you to enter a State which does mainly not exist as part of the address outside the US. Fortunately it did not validate the entry so "ZH" was OK. While these are minor things it annoys if you have this all the time and I ask myself if it is ignorance or simply bad education that they don't use better forms. I guess it is actually both...
