The Tel Aviv based
Alvarion seems to be
dominating the WiMAX market with a 81% market share. This is the outcome of a survey by
Skylight Research, an Arizona based (one woman I assume) market research company. While knowing that Alvarion is most likely the leader in this market space due to their early focus on WiMAX and partnership with Intel, such a big lead is surprising. Maybe the market share number is not totally correct, but it at least gives a strong hint that there is with Alvarion a clear number one provider of WiMAX equipment. Some of the other WiMAX vendors that I would think are at least in the top 10 list are:
Many other players are also doing a little WiMAX but have a different focus such as e.g. Soma Networks (CDMA), Tropos Networks (meshed metro Wifi), Proxim Wireless (all), Skypilot (meshed metro Wifi). What above list also shows is that none of the big companies such as Motorola, Siemens/Nokia, Ericsson or Alcatel/Lucent are playing any role yet. They partly use equipment from the listed WiMAX companies but are certainly working on their own products currently.
